Zirconia Grades Explained — 3Y, 4Y, 5Y: Strength vs. Translucency (Which to Use and When)
Zirconia Grades 3Y, 4Y, and 5Y have primarily differenced with regards to the amount of yttria which determines strength, translucency, and furthermore indications.
• The strongest among them is the 3Y zirconia (1100–1400 MPa), so it is very likely that posterior crowns, long-span bridges, and full-arch implant frameworks will be done with this material.
• By using 4Y zirconia the dentist gets translucency at the expense of only slight reduction in strength (900–1100 MPa), thus making it suitable for both anterior and posterior crowns as well as 3-unit bridges.
• 5Y zirconia gives the absolute highest translucency for crowns, veneers, and aesthetic restorations in the anterior area but it is advised not to use it for full arches. Coalescing multilayer zirconia 3Y/4Y/5Y gives feet to the natural esthetic with still more on the side of stronger cervical zones and translucent incisal areas. The proper selection of the grade not only helps fracture-free conditions but also increases accuracy and optimization of CAD-CAM workflows.
